Variety is the spice of life, and also when it comes to Pittsburgh's 2022 NHL Draft Class.

The Penguins welcomed five new prospects to the organization on Thursday and Friday at the Bell Centre in Montreal, starting with defenseman Owen Pickering in the first round.
On Day 2, they added goaltender Sergey Murashov in the fourth round; forward Zam Plante in the fifth round; and defenseman Nolan Collins and forward Luke Devlin in the sixth round. The Penguins traded their seventh-round pick to Florida for the Panthers' seventh-round pick next year.
"We were just really happy with the player we got in each round, and we stuck to that
best player available approach
," Penguins director of amateur scouting Nick Pryor said. "Each guy that we got, there's some different player types and they're in different positions. But we're really excited about all the guys that were able to select."
During last year's draft, the first under general manager Ron Hextall, the team was looking to add attributes like size and toughness into the team's prospect pool through the draft without sacrificing skill. This year, their mindset was broader, with Pryor saying that there wasn't a specific area they honed in on.
They just wanted to make the most of the picks that remained, particularly that first-rounder, as the Penguins have had to pay the price of being a perennial Stanley Cup contender by sacrificing some assets over the years.
"Just having picks and keeping our first round pick this year, getting Owen - we were really excited about him - I think we'll continue to chip away at adding to our prospect pool," Pryor said. "Every guy that we got this year, we were really excited to get them in the round that we got them."
Below is a look at each one, with some added insight from Pryor.

Owen Pickering

Selection:First Round (21st Overall)
Position:Defenseman
Shoots:Left
Height:6-4
Weight:180
Age:18
Hometown:St. Adolphe, Manitoba
Represents:Canada
Amateur Team:Swift Current Broncos (WHL)
Pryor's Take:"He's a big kid, and he's got a really good feel for his size. His puck skills are good. He's good in his own end, and he can contribute offensively as well. For him, it's going to be about maturing physically and just adding to that frame. Our whole staff is really big on hockey sense and competitiveness, and we feel that Owen checks those boxes, as well as some other boxes as well. So just really excited about him."
Fun Fact:Pickering's cousin Denton Mateychuk, who was ranked one slot above him at No. 14 among North American skaters on NHL Central Scouting, was drafted 12th overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Sergey Murashov

Selection:Fourth Round (118th Overall)
Position:Goalie
Catches:Right
Height:6-0
Weight:167
Age:18
Hometown:Yaroslavl, Russia
Represents:Russia
Amateur Team:Lokomotiv Yarsoslavl
Pryor's Take:"Sergey is a goalie that both our (goaltending development coach) Charles Grant and Russian scout Alexander (Khavanov) were both very high on. He's really calm in the net. He's got good hockey sense for a goalie and good athletic ability. Just someone that we were high on as a staff." He is the only player from this draft class that will likely not attend development camp, which is set for July 10-14.

Zam Plante

Selection:Fifth Round (150th Overall)
Position:Forward
Shoots:Left
Height:5-10
Weight:165
Age:17
Hometown:Hermantown, Minnesota
Represents:United States
Amateur Team:Hermantown High School (MNHS)/Chicago Steel (USHL); Committed to Minnesota-Duluth ('23-24)
Pryor's Take:"Zam's a tremendous kid. He's got hockey bloodlines. He plays with a big motor for a small player. He's got a lot of hockey sense and a lot of skill. Just a kid that's going to need time to fill out and add to his frame, but when we talk about Zam, it's skill and hockey sense. And he's extremely competitive for a smaller player."

Fun Fact:Pryor mentioned those bloodlines - Plante's father Derek, who is an associate coach at Minnesota-Duluth, played eight seasons in the NHL with Buffalo, Dallas, Chicago and Philadelphia from 1993-01. Derek had been mowing the lawn when he found out that he had been drafted by Buffalo in the eighth round (161st overall) back in 1989. In order to avoid a similar fate for his son, Derek asked Zam if he wanted to go to Montreal, and of course the younger Plante said yes.
After being chosen, Zam got a FaceTime call from fellow Minnesota boy Jake Guentzel - the player Plante models his game after, and someone he looks up to.

Nolan Collins

Selection:Sixth Round (167th Overall)
Position:Defenseman
Shoots:Right
Height:6-3
Weight:194
Age:18
Hometown:Whitby, Ontario
Represents:Canada
Amateur Team:Sudbury Wolves (OHL)
Pryor's Take: "He's a big defender. He moves well for his size. He's got a good puck game for his size. He brings some grit and some physicality to the back end. He's a player that we were excited about."

Luke Devlin

Selection:Sixth Round (182nd Overall)
Position:Forward
Shoots:Left
Height:6-2
Weight:185
Age:18
Hometown:Memphis, Tennessee
Represents:United States
Amateur Team:St. Andrew's College (PHC, '21-22); West Kelowna (BCHL, '22-23); Cornell (NCAA, '23-24)
Pryor's Take: "He's a big center. He moves extremely well for his size. He brings a lot of compete and he does a really good job on both sides of the puck, playing a responsible game. He plays a really competitive game as well."
