MVPindex used a formula called Engagement Value Assessment (EVA) to evaluate professional sports teams' social activity in the past year and determine potential market value - including the categories of Reach (fans, followers, impressions); Engagement (likes, comments, shares, retweets, favorites); and Conversation (positive/negative mentions).
The Penguins had an Engagement Value Assessment of $66.3 million according to data collected from Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube from January 1 through December 12, 2018. The Penguins also had 36.2 million engagements and "led all NHL teams in social value per post at $7.3K."
MVP Index looked at social media platforms and content created by teams in five North American pro leagues - the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL and MLS.
The Penguins ranked 25th overall in pro sports. Four of the top five teams were from the NBA, led by the No. 1 Golden State Warriors. Top teams in other sports were the Los Angeles Dodgers (MLB) and Dallas Cowboys (NFL).
