Essentials: Amanda Kessel

Amanda Kessel has been all over the globe with the U.S. women's national team, most recently winning gold at the 2023 Women's World Championship in Brampton, Canada. Now, the three-time Olympic medalist calls Pittsburgh home while working as an Executive Fellow with the Penguins. She took some time away from her duties to share some of her must-haves, both on and off the ice, at home and on the road.

Creatine and electrolytes

I always pack creatine. I started using it after hearing from trainers that it's good for you, and for your brain function. I mainly mix it with chocolate milk and protein. Then I always have to have Drip Drop electrolytes. I put a packet into every single water I have. I just don't love plain water. The only way I'll drink a lot is if I flavor it.

Heating pad

I did the cold stuff when I was younger, but have found that heat is better for me.

Oura ring

It's another thing I use for recovery. I don't wear it in my equipment, but I make sure I have this on every trip I go on to see my sleep. We were given them before the last Olympics, when they were just starting out as a company.

MyZone heart rate monitor

Everybody on our team wears them. After your skate, you can see your calories and your effort levels. With that, if you don't have it, it's at the point that you get somebody to bring it to the rink for you (laughs). I've had teammates put on their skate guards to go back out to the car, and I'll actually turn around and go home to grab it if I forget it. Knowing what you've done and how hard you worked that day is huge. I use it to try to replicate a game, get my heart rate up, because it's really hard.

High ponytail

It is definitely needed. That's how I wear my hair under my helmet. It's just always worked best for me.

I got them as gifts, and I always wear them when I play.

Hair and makeup must-haves

I use Estee Lauder mascara and Dior liquid foundation and concealer. Those are my two main makeup brands, and I use Dagne Dover makeup bags. Then when I'm traveling, I always have to bring DryBar Detox Dry Shampoo and my GHD hair straightener. My big suitcase is Rimowa.

Mackage winter coat

I had that on every single day this winter!
