Five months after their NHL club spent a couple of weeks in an Edmonton bubble, a few more Predators representatives will be making a trip to Alberta, Canada.
Five of Nashville's top prospects will represent their countries at the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship later this month, as they vie for a gold medal under circumstances the likes of which the tournament has never seen before. Only five NHL teams have more prospects slated to participate at the World Juniors than the Predators.
After Canada announced
Preds prospect Philip Tomasino had made their roster on Friday, Russia added goaltender Iaroslav Askarov, forward Egor Afanasyev and defenseman Semyon Chistyakov to their list, and forward Juuso Parssinen officially joined Team Finland for the World Juniors that are set to begin on Christmas Day at Rogers Place in Edmonton.

The tournament will be played in a bubble setting similar to what the NHL hosted during the summer months as they completed the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Tomasino was one of 25 players to see his name on the final ledger. Tomasino is one of 14 forwards to make the team after a total of 47 players participated in Team Canada's camp.
The Preds loaned the 19-year-old to Team Canada on Nov. 17 for their World Junior Championship selection camp, after he recorded 100 points (40g-60a) in 62 OHL games with Niagara and Oshawa during the 2019-20 season. Nashville's first-round pick in 2019 (24th overall) was fourth in the OHL in points, tied for fifth in assists and ninth in goals en route to hitting the 100-point mark for the first time.
The Russian trio of Askarov, Afanasyev and Chistyakov have already experienced success together this year; the trio combined to help lead Russia to a championship in the Karjala Cup back in November.
Askarov starred in net for the Russians in the tournament; the 18-year-old netminder, who the Predators selected with the 11th overall pick in the 2020 NHL Draft, backstopped Russia to a tournament title by winning all three of his appearances, while posting a 0.98 goals-against average and a .962 save percentage. Askarov's exclamation point came in the final contest against the Czech Republic, when he recorded a 29-save shutout to claim the trophy.
The Predators loaned Afanasyev to Russia's World Juniors selection camp ahead of the tournament. Drafted by the Preds in the second round of the 2019 NHL Draft, the 19-year-old made his KHL and professional hockey debut on Nov. 14 vs. Sochi, tallying two points (1g-1a) and a +2 rating.
Chistyakov was also drafted by the Preds in 2019 and had three points (1g-2a) in 28 games with Avangard Omsk of the KHL, his first professional season.
Parssinen was selected 210th overall by Nashville in the 2019 draft and sits fourth on TPS (Finland) in scoring with 12 points (2g-10a), equaling his Liiga total from 2019-20 in 13 fewer games. He is expected to play an important role among Finland's forwards at the World Juniors.
The schedule for the 2021 World Juniors was released on Monday
, with Russia slated to take on the United States on Christmas night. The U.S. and Russia are in Group B for the preliminary round, along with Sweden, Austria and the Czech Republic. Canada, the 2020 tournament winner, is in Group A, along with Finland, Switzerland, Slovakia and Germany.
The top four teams in each group will play in the quarterfinals Jan. 2. The semifinals are Jan. 4, and the championship and third-place games are Jan. 5. Since the IIHF announced the cancelation of five lower-level under-20 tournaments, there will be no relegation or promotion from the 2021 WJC.
NHL Network will broadcast live every game from the tournament in the United States.
