Ryan McDonagh scored with 3:16 remaining in the third period to lift the Nashville Predators to a 3-2 win over the Washington Capitals Friday at Capital One Arena.
Kevin Lankinen made 30 saves in goal for the Predators, who improved to 18-14-6 with the win and extended their point streak to five games (4-0-1).

THE STORY

The Predators got on the board first when Tommy Novak took advantage of a turnover at the boards and snapped a shot in from the edge of the face-off circle to make it 1-0 at 4:10 of the first period. Sonny Milano then tied it up for Washington with a tap-in from the right post at 9:52.
The Preds retook the lead with five minutes remaining in the first period when Yakov Trenin batted in a bouncing puck in front of the net to make it a 2-1 game heading into the first intermission.
Washington tied things up in the second, when Nicolas Aube-Kubel cut around Nino Niederreiter and beat Lankinen between the pads at 11:07. The score remained knotted at 2 until 16:44 of the third period, when McDonagh snuck one around Charlie Lindgren for a 3-2 final.

THEY SAID IT

McDonagh on netting his first as a Predator and the game-winner:
"We had a kind of a set play off the draw. We won the draw first and they were kind of jumping with some pressure. So the play kind of lost its way and I just tried to get some speed there and Dutchy to Joey connected and obviously it was a great play by Joey to find me streaking there and fortunate to find a way to put it in."
Lankinen on slotting in for Saros on the second of the back-to-back:
"I was happy that I didn't have to face 67 shots, but Juice did an amazing job last night. He's a great guy, a great goalie and he got the win for us last night, so it was my turn tonight. And I really wanted to come in here and get another win and that's what we did."
Lankinen on Nashville's penalty kill against Washington:
"That means a lot. You see Carrier and all the other guys put their body on the line for you, and that's what you want to do for them as well. And I think that's the price you've got to pay for a win. Sometimes it hurts a little bit, but it's always going to feel better after a win."
Coach Hynes on Nashville's improved play in recent games:
"I think we've played some pretty good hockey in the last few weeks and we've really built up our game and I like some components that we've been doing offensively in the last few games. We've played some pretty good teams, but our commitment to shot blocking, some good goaltending and our physical game - they've been hard games. So it's nice to be able to put in the effort and the commitment that we're making and be able to get the results."
McDonagh on Nashville's improved play in recent games:
"We're obviously getting some consistency and finding a recipe here. And more importantly, we're showing our character and guys are sacrificing and showing some will. Especially last night, that was a huge performance by our goaltender but a lot of blocked shots. And again here tonight, Carrier with the big blocked shot on Ovechkin there late in the game and guys were doing it throughout the start of the game all the way to the end. So, those are the things that add up and make a difference and we're seeing it pay off here recently."
McDonagh on Lankinen's performance:
"He was right up there with the way Saros played. Not as many saves, obviously, but timely saves and there's just so much confidence in both those guys that we have. We're so very fortunate. Obviously, you have a lot of strengths and confidence in your starter but the way these two have been playing, we know we've got a great chance to win every night."
