Dante Fabbro is feeling good.
A three-point outing - the first of his career,
which came Tuesday night in Detroit in the midst of a 5-2 win for the Predators
- will do that for anyone, but the Nashville defenseman was carrying a heightened confidence long before a goal and two helpers added another boost.
The Preds always believed Fabbro would be an integral part of their blue line. Picked at No. 17 overall in the 2017 NHL Draft, Fabbro instantly became one of Nashville's top prospects, and less than two years later, he made his NHL debut as the Predators completed their playoff push and collected another Central Division title in the spring of 2019.

Fabbro's first full season began that fall, and there were ups-and-downs - as expected with any young D-man - and Fabbro worked to find his game and solidify himself as an everyday NHLer. But in the latter portions of the 2020-21 campaign, Fabbro suffered an injury and then found it difficult to find his way back into the lineup, including being a healthy scratch during all six games of Nashville's postseason run.
The 23-year-old knew the summer of 2021 would carry vast importance, and since returning to Nashville and starting the new season with an increased role - mostly skating alongside Preds Captain Roman Josi - Fabbro hasn't disappointed.
And there's always room for improvement, still.
"I do feel great, but I do know there's a lot of areas in my game I still need to get better at and continue to improve on," Fabbro said last month. "That's what I try to do every day and continue to work on those things. You look at our D-corps, I think anybody can be in and out every night, and we're just so deep back there. And so, I just want to put my head down, work as hard as I can, do anything I can to help our team win and obviously improve my skill set as well."

NSH@DET: Fabbro scores in 3rd period

"I would agree with that," Preds Head Coach John Hynes said of Fabbro's assessment of his game. "I think the big picture of Dante's game is pretty strong and more of what we want… The thing I really like about him right now is that his evaluation of his own game is bang on. Like, if [Preds Assistant Coach] Todd Richards goes and talks to him, says, 'What do you think of your game last night?' Lots of times he's very accurate. It's not general statements that say, 'I didn't have the best night in these areas, these components of my game were strong.' So again, I think another evolution of maturity for him, and the willingness and desire for him to get better at the areas that he needs to continue to do is a good sign."
Of course, skating with a Norris Trophy-caliber defenseman doesn't hurt matters either, and Fabbro has noticed a difference in being able to play alongside Josi with regularity.
"You look at a Norris-winning defenseman like that, and you can definitely pick his brain on certain things he does out there," Fabbro said of Josi. "He's a different player than I am, and he's obviously world-class, so just being able to learn off of him and being able to read off of him has definitely helped me quite a bit. Just him talking to me on the ice has kind of calmed me down to just get out there and just kind of do my thing and make the right plays."
While Fabbro has seen the benefits of skating with his defense partner, the feeling is mutual on the left side. Josi is having one of the best starts to a season of his career and is at or near the top of the League when it comes to offensive output by a defenseman, and the captain believes Fabbro has plenty to do with that success.
"Well, I think he's playing really well defensively and he's really solid," Josi said of Fabbro. "What I benefit the most from playing with him is his puck poise. The way he makes plays back there he's so poised with the puck, and he hits me a lot in stride. He makes a great outlet pass and allows me to jump [into the play]. His overall game is really good right now. I love playing with him. He's awesome, and I think he's been [playing] really consistent this year, too."
In the grand scheme of things, Fabbro's career is still in its infancy stages, but he's finding his way. A little adversity never hurt anyone, and he's become stronger for it.
Now, Fabbro hopes the major growing pains are behind him. If the last two months are any indication, they are.
"Last year was unfortunate, but it was the way it was going," Fabbro said. "Getting hurt and our team starting to win and you're going to the playoffs at that point of the year, I just had to be a great teammate and cheer the guys on in any way I could… But I think this year, this summer, I've been really focused on skating and just getting myself ready to have a good season this year. So far, it's gone well. But I'd obviously like to produce a little bit more… But the team's winning, we're playing well and I'm really happy with that."

Preds Prospect Evangelista Invited to Team Canada Selection Camp:

Last week,
Zachary L'Heureux was receiving accolades from the QMJHL
, but another Predators prospect could soon be skating for his country in the greatest junior hockey tournament on Earth.
Luke Evangelista, also the captain of the London Knights of the OHL,
was named to the roster for Team Canada's final selection camp
, which will be held in Calgary from Dec. 9 to 13. Evangelista is among 21 forwards vying for a spot on Team Canada at the 2021 World Junior Championships set to begin one day after Christmas, and his stats suggest he may have as good of a shot as anyone.

As of Wednesday, Evangelista was tied for the OHL lead in goals with 20 and was tied for second in points with 40 in just 21 games. The 19-year-old, who was selected by the Preds in the second round of the 2020 NHL Draft, has recorded a point in all but one of those contests this season, including back-to-back four-point outings on Nov. 20 and 21.
Evangelista is also the leading scorer on his team, of course, and he's led the Knights to the OHL's best record with a 17-5-1 mark on the campaign.

Rocco Grimaldi scored twice in Friday's victory, while Cody Glass and Michael McCarron also found twine. One night later, Matt Luff, Kole Sherwood, Mitch McLain, Cole Smith and Joseph LaBate all tallied for Milwaukee, and Connor Ingram earned both wins in net.

Cole Schneider leads the Ads in scoring with seven goals and 21 points, while Luff - who was recalled to Nashville earlier this week - and Glass are tied with 16 points apiece. Grimaldi has seven goals and 10 points in 11 games with Milwaukee, and David Farrance has one goal and nine helpers from the backend. Ingram, who was recalled Tuesday to serve as the backup for the Preds in Detroit, has six wins on the season.
