A former 30-goal scorer in the NHL and a lifelong Red Wings fan, Booth was realistic about his role if he indeed joined the Wings.
He would be Detroit's 13th forward, a player who would see spot duty if someone suffered a minor injury or suddenly became ill. And Booth relished his part.
From the moment he stepped onto the ice, Booth embraced every aspect of being with the Red Wings. His attitude, hard play and fitness level impressed the Wings brass, and on October 2, Detroit signed him to a one-year, two-way deal.
Throughout the season, Booth's play earned him more playing time, but ultimately, it played out like he originally thought, with him seeing limited action.
Yet it didn't keep him down.
When his former team, the Vancouver Canucks, came to town in late October, Booth told the Canucks press corps that the best year of his hockey career was this season playing for the Red Wings, even though he knew his position on the team was as a fill-in.
Although he met every one of Detroit's expectations, it's unlikely the Red Wings will re-sign the 33-year-old Booth since the Wings are committed to becoming younger as they continue to retool their roster.
