By the Numbers Prospects: Dominic Turgeon

By the Numbers will highlight the on-ice accomplishments in the 2019-20 season for the Detroit Red Wings' prospects. Twice a week during the offseason, By the Numbers will profile a different player in the system, focusing on his statistical highs. This week we focus on center Dominic Turgeon.

When new players are drafted, fans sometimes forget about other players in the system.
But center Dominic Turgeon, who made his NHL debut during the 2017-18 season, is still only 24 years old.
The Wings took Turgeon in the third round, 63rd overall, in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.
Since turning pro four years ago, the 6-foot-2, 199-pound forward has developed into a solid defensive forward, playing primarily for the Red Wings' AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins.
While he does have offensive ability, Turgeon's focus is often on shutting down other teams' top players.
In 2017-18, Turgeon played five NHL games and then played four in 2018-19. This past season the majority of the Red Wings' injuries were suffered by defensemen so Turgeon never got the call.
It remains to be seen what the 2020-21 season will hold but the American Hockey League has announced that its season will begin no earlier than Friday, Dec. 4.

63 - Turgeon played in a team-high 63 games for the Griffins. Turner Elson was second with 61.
10- In those 63 games, Turgeon scored 10 goals, tied with Matthew Ford. It marks four more goals than he had in 72 games during the 2018-19 season. Chris Terry led the team with 21 goals.
2 - Turgeon had a career-best two shorthanded goals. No other Griffin had more than one. The first came Jan. 8 at Milwaukee in a 3-2 victory and was the game-winner. The second came Jan. 22 at home against the Iowa Wild, a 4-3 shootout win.

13 - Turgeon also had 13 assists for the Griffins, tied with Elson. Terry led with 30 assists.
23- Turgeon was tied with rookie Joe Veleno in points with 23. Terry was the leader in points with 51. Turgeon also wears No. 23.
7 - Turgeon was second on the Griffins in plus-minus at plus-7. Elson was plus-8. 4 - Despite playing in the most games, Turgeon had just four penalty minutes, tied with Blake Hillman, who had four in five games.
102- With 102 shots, Turgeon was one of eight players to register more than 100 this past season. Terry led with 156.

I think he's obviously a guy that is good on both ends of the ice but more so in the defensive zone. He's a great penalty killer, he's good on draws.
