The Detroit Red Wings today acquired a second-round draft pick in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft and a conditional third-round pick in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for right wing Gustav Nyquist.

The conditional third-round draft pick in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft would become a second-round pick in the same draft should the Sharks advance to the 2019 Stanley Cup Final or should Nyquist re-sign with the Sharks. The Red Wings currently hold 10 draft picks for the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, owning their own selection in each round in addition to the NY Islanders' second-round pick (via Vegas), San Jose's second-round pick and Columbus' fifth-round pick. They also own 17 selections between the 2020 and 2021 NHL Entry Drafts, having added Washington's second-round pick in 2020, San Jose's third-round selection in 2020 and Vegas' third-round choice in 2021 in addition to their own picks in each round.
Nyquist, 29, was originally drafted by the Red Wings in the fourth round (121st overall) of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. The Halmstad, Sweden, native registered 295 points (125-170-295) in 481 games with the Red Wings since making his NHL debut in 2011-12. In 2018-19, Nyquist posted 49 points (16-33-49) in 62 games for Detroit, ranking second on the team in scoring. He was also a two-time AHL All-Star (2012, 2013) with the American Hockey League's Grand Rapids Griffins and totaled 143 points (53-90-143) in 137 games with the team, capped off with a 2013 Calder Cup championship. Nyquist also represented Sweden at the 2014 Olympics and compiled 19 points (15-4-19) in 27 games over three appearances at the IIHF World Championships in 2014, 2016 and 2018.
