The Detroit Red Wings continue to shine a light on cancer treatment and research.

On Thursday night, Red Wings forward Michael Rasmussen stopped by Walled Lake Northern High School in Commerce Township, Mich., for the varsity girls volleyball Gold Out game between Walled Lake Northern and Kettering High School to help kick off Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, as part of the American Cancer Society Gold Together Champions Michigan campaign, presented by the Detroit Red Wings Foundation.
"Whether you're a pro athlete or anyone in the spotlight, you can help different causes or have a voice," Rasmussen said on Thursday. "I think it's important."
Rasmussen added that being part of the state-wide campaign "means a lot."
"I think it affects everyone in their own way, personally or someone they know," Rasmussen said. "It means finding a cure for cancer and helping people with cancer."
The American Cancer Society, the nation's largest non-profit source of cancer research funding, and the Red Wings have been longtime partners for several initiatives, including the NHL's Hockey Fights Cancer campaign. Together since 2016, more than $150,000 has been raised to support the American Cancer Society's mission.
And this month, the Detroit Red Wings Foundation has joined the American Cancer Society as the Gold Together Champions Michigan campaign Presenting Sponsor.
"The Detroit Red Wings, Detroit Red Wings Foundation and our passionate fans have been proud supporters of the American Cancer Society for many years through efforts like Hockey Fights Cancer Night, presented by Comerica Bank," said Kevin Brown, director of community impact for Ilitch Sports + Entertainment. "We're honored to join American Cancer Society's Gold Together Champions Michigan campaign - sharing our platform and position to work toward solutions that help kids fulfill their potential without fear of a cancer diagnosis cutting those dreams short."
