DETROIT -- The Detroit Red Wings today agreed to terms with defenseman Eemil Viro on a three-year entry-level contract.

Viro, 19, completed his second season with TPS of the SM-Liiga, Finland's top professional league, recording 14 points (4-10-14), 24 penalty minutes and a plus-13 rating in 53 games to help the team to a third place finish in the regular season. The 6-foot, 171-pound blueliner also suited up in 13 playoff games for TPS during the 2020-21 campaign, tallying four points (3-1-4) and 31 penalty minutes as the club finished runner up in the league playoffs. Viro made his professional debut during the 2019-20 season, skating in 29 games with TPS as a 17-year-old, picking up three assists and eight penalty minutes.
Drafted by the Red Wings in the third-round (70th overall) of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, Viro tallied six points (1-5-6) and 14 penalty minutes in 15 games for TPS' under-20 team and holds a career total of seven points (1-6-7) in 19 games at that level, along with 20 points (7-13-20) in 43 games in the under-18 league and 49 points (16-33-49) in 39 games on the under-16 circuit, all for TPS. The Vantaa, Finland, native has also represented his country at international competitions - claiming a bronze medal at the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship after skating in seven games and recording two assists, four penalty minutes and a plus-seven rating, winning a silver medal at the 2018 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge and making three appearances at the 2019 Hlinka Gretzky Cup.
