Recap: Red Wings blanked by Calgary for first regulation loss, 3-0

DETROIT -- The Calgary Flames scored a pair of goals in the first period, all the offense they would need in a 3-0 shutout of the Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena on Thursday night.
Calgary picked up its first win of the season, while the Red Wings (2-1-1) suffered their first setback in regulation. Flames goalie Jacob Markstrom turned aside 32 shots to record his first shutout of the 2021-22 campaign.

"I thought over the first two periods, we created enough chances to score, and we didn't score," Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. "Certainly in the first, I thought we started well. Then I did not like our game after about the five-minute mark.
"The second (period), obviously, we carried the majority of the play, and we had chances. So it wasn't like we didn't have open looks in the slot area. The third, I thought they did an excellent job of a road win. They just put it in, made us go 200 feet. We stayed on the outside too much, and I didn't think we shot enough pucks. We didn't have, to me, the same level of energy that we've had, especially in the third period."

Calgary got on the board at the 9:54 mark of the opening period after Elias Lindholm buried a shot from just outside the crease. It was his team-leading third goal of the season. The Flames extended their lead to 2-0 with 5:27 remaining after Andrew Mangiapane backhanded a rebound past Red Wings goalie Alex Nedeljkovic.
Detroit edged Calgary on shots in the opening 20 minutes, 12-11. Lucas Raymond logged 5:01 of ice time in the period, producing four shots on goal.
The Red Wings drew a pair of penalties in the second period, but came up empty in the scoring column. Calgary went on the power play following a Givani Smith slashing penalty with 4:11 left, but the Red Wings' penalty kill unit kept the game at a two-goal deficit (2-0) heading into the dressing room at the second intermission.
Detroit's Pius Suter drew what resulted in a shortened power play in the opening minute (19:11) of the third period, but Dylan Larkin was whistled for a hooking mishap less than a minute later (18:16). The Red Wings struggled to produce any quality scoring chances in the final period, and Matthew Tkachuk put the game out of reach with an empty net goal, his first of the season, with 2:18 remaining.
The Red Wings will begin their first road trip of the season on Saturday night (7 p.m.) at Montreal. The Canadiens are 0-5-0 on the season, and dropped a 4-1 decision against the Carolina Hurricanes at the Bell Centre on Thursday.
