Dominik Kubalik and captain Dylan Larkin each scored a power-play goal for Detroit, which trailed, 4-2, early in the third period. After pulling goalie Alex Nedeljkovic for an extra skater late in regulation, Filip Hronek's goal brought the Red Wings within one with 2:01 remaining, but they weren't able to record the equalizer before the final horn sounded.
"Over 60 minutes, we left too many plays out there," head coach Derek Lalonde said. "That ended up, unfortunately, in the back of our net. But again, on a whole with the process, we gave ourselves a chance."
Nedeljkovic stopped 17-of-21 shots for Detroit, which dropped to 7-5-3 overall this season.
David Perron recorded an assist on Kubalik's power-play goal, becoming the fifth active Quebec-born player to reach the 400-assist mark.
"When we play our game, it's effective," Perron said. "Again, we just gotta do it from the start and not wait."
