RECAP: Red Wings drop 4-2 decision to Maple Leafs

The Detroit Red Wings' season-high four-game winning streak ended with a 4-2 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday night at Little Caesars Arena.

The Red Wings, wearing their adidas Reverse Retro jerseys for the first time this season, grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first period on Moritz Seider's second goal of the 2022-23 campaign, but Toronto responded with four straight tallies before the second intermission.
Adam Erne's third-period goal cut Detroit's late deficit in half, but that was as close as the Red Wings would get against the Maple Leafs despite outshooting them, 44-25.
"It's just one of those nights that the puck just didn't go our way, which is gonna happen," head coach Derek Lalonde said. "Again, I thought our guys hung in there and played the right way for the most part."
Goalie Ville Husso allowed four goals on 13 shots before being replaced by fellow netminder Alex Nedeljkovic, who stopped all 12 shots he faced in 28:34 of relief.
With the loss, Detroit dropped to 11-6-4 on the season. Toronto moved to 14-5-5 (33 points) and extended its point streak to nine straight games.
"We had a lot of chances, but we just didn't get the puck in the net," captain Dylan Larkin said. "Credit to the way they played and (Matt) Murray in net."

Dominik Kubalik chased down a loose puck in the neutral zone, drove through the Maple Leafs' offensive zone and sent a shot that was stopped by Murray. After Larkin tried to poke the puck past Murray, Seider managed to jam it through a crowded crease over the goal line. With the tally, Seider became the fourth Detroit defenseman in franchise history to register at least 60 career NHL points at age 21 or younger.

An Auston Matthews wrister from the slot went off Husso and into the back of the net to tie the game.
Toronto 2, Detroit 1 (9:15, 1st period)
William Nylander scored his 150th career NHL goal on a power play, recording Toronto's first man-advantage tally on its current road trip.
Toronto 3, Detroit 1 (00:52, 2nd period)
Mitchell Marner converted a shot from the slot, extending his point streak to 17 consecutive games.
Toronto 4, Detroit 1 (8:37, 2nd period)
After taking Matthews' pass from just below the Detroit blue line, Rasmus Sandin turned and put a pinpoint wrister past Husso.
Detroit 2, Toronto 4 (12:41, 3rd period)
Seider's shot from the Maple Leafs blue line was tipped in by Erne for his third goal of the season. Ben Chiarot also picked up an assist on Erne's goal.
