DETROIT -- As hard as it may be to believe, by the time the Red Wings complete this weekend's mini-homestand with the Florida Panthers, Detroit's regular season will be more than 15 percent complete. Urgency is high as the Red Wings look to get back on track beginning with Saturday night's 7 p.m. puck drop at Little Caesars Arena.

The Red Wings have dropped four straight after opening the season with back-to-back series splits against opponents that advanced to the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs. For the first time this season, Detroit will face a familiar division foe from a traditional season. The Panthers and Red Wings are both members of the Eastern Conference Atlantic Division, and play four times per season. They'll square off eight times during the shortened 2020-21 campaign.
While panic is far from setting in, first-year Red Wings defenseman Troy Stecher acknowledged that he and his teammates weren't happy with their performance in Chicago and Dallas, and are eager to take home ice tonight.
"Obviously, anytime you're on a losing streak, guys are upset and pissed off," Stecher said. "We have an opportunity. We're at home now, we've got to take pride in playing at home. This is a good opportunity to change the page."
"We didn't get the results we wanted (on the road trip), but I think it was definitely a good learning curve for our group early in the season," said Stecher. "Understanding that we've got to play a certain way if we want to have success. When you get away from that, obviously you're going to get exposed, especially at this level."
Florida is off to a 3-0-1 start after having the beginning of its season delayed due to the Dallas Stars' COVID-19 outbreak. The Panthers have scored four or more goals in three games, and saw both of its contests at Columbus extended to a shootout.
Five Panthers have tallied at least four points in the early going, led by centerman Carter Verhaeghe's six points on four goals and a pair of assists. Forward Patric Hornqvist has chipped in with four goals, while winger Anthony Duclair has collected five assists. Sergei Bobrovsky and Chris Driedger have split time in net, with Driedger boasting a 1.92 goals-against-average that currently ranks ninth among NHL goalies.
"They're a team that forechecks well, they get locks of pucks to the slot area," Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. "Verhaeghe's had a good start there, playing with (Aleksander) Barkov. They've been in some close games, found ways to get points or win them. I think that's what the league is. Every night you have opportunities - even if the score doesn't end up close - to make a play to either win or lose. They've found a way to be on the right side."
The Red Wings are 2-2 at Little Caesars Arena this season, recording series splits against the Carolina Hurricanes and Columbus Blue Jackets.
Sunday's series finale will begin at 5 p.m., in recognition of Little Caesars' $5 Hot-N-Ready Classic Pizza. Little Caesars will serve as the presenting sponsor of a pair of Sunday matinees -- this Sunday (Jan. 31) and March 14.

SCOUTING THE RED WINGS

• Captain Dylan Larkin and forward Tyler Bertuzzi enter this weekend's homestand leading the Red Wings in scoring, with six points each. Bertuzzi has scored three goals in the past three games.

Filip Hronek continues to anchor the Red Wings' blue line, and has collected a team-best five assists.
• Goalie Thomas Greiss could earn the starting assignment for the Red Wings in Saturday's series opener. While suiting up for the New York Islanders, the 35-year-old Greiss posted a 5-2-1 record with a 2.10 goals-against average and .930 save percentage against the Florida Panthers.

SCOUTING THE PANTHERS

• Florida was 3-0 against the Red Wings last season and has won six straight in the series.
• The Panthers started the 2020-21 season with three consecutive wins, a franchise record.
• Florida is mentored Joel Quenneville, a familiar face for the Red Wings. Quenneville, who is in his second season behind the bench for the Panthers, has more than 20 years of NHL head coaching experience, most recently with the Chicago Blackhawks (2008-18). A native of Windsor, Ontario, Quenneville is one of only two head coaches in NHL History to reach 900 wins. Quenneville is a four-time Stanley Cup champion, with three championships won as a head coach.
