DET@BUF: Seider scores game-winning goal

BUFFALO -- In another example of the kind of resolve the Red Wings have shown in the early portion of the 2021-22 season, Moritz Seider and Tyler Bertuzzi led Detroit to a come-from-behind, 4-3 overtime win over the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday night at KeyBank Center.
Seider scored the first goal of his NHL career - the game-winner in the extra session - and Bertuzzi scored two goals just 90 seconds apart late in the third period, helping the Red Wings snap a four-game losing streak and improve their record to 5-5-2 (12 points) on the season.

Seider - who was named the NHL's October Rookie of the Month earlier this week - came off the bench in overtime, avoided a check along the boards and wristed a shot past Sabres goalie Dustin Tokarski to erase a 3-1 deficit, and cap off three unanswered goals in the third period and overtime.
"It was nice getting a game-winner, but you don't get any more pride for that," Seider said. "It's just one goal. I'm way more happy with the two points tonight, and the way we played, because we did it the right way in the third period."

DET@BUF: Bertuzzi grabs another goal

Lucas Raymond tallied three assists to add to his points lead among NHL rookies (13). Newcomer Pius Suter scored his second goal of the season and Alex Nedeljkovic made 29 saves to secure his second win of the season.
Buffalo's Tage Thompson, Rasmus Dahlin and Arttu Ruotsalainen each found the back of the net, and Dustin Tokarski made 29 saves, but it wasn't enough as Buffalo fell to 5-4-2 (12 points) overall.
"I thought it was, obviously big," Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. "Every one in this league is big, but obviously being down 3-1 after a number of losses in a row and some tough performances, you start to lose your confidence a little bit. The dig in there late, I thought was huge, you know, led by Tyler Bertuzzi. I just thought he dug in and did a real good job, and to find a way to come back is big."

The game could not have gotten off to a better start for Detroit with Suter jamming a loose puck past Tokarski just 16 seconds into the first period to give the Red Wings an early 1-0 lead. It marked the fastest goal to start a game for the Red Wings since Jan. 10, 2016, against the Anaheim Ducks.

In the second period, with Detroit still clinging to a 1-0 advantage, the Sabres would take the lead after scoring a pair of goals in just 1:06 of game time. Thompson finished a no-look feed from Jeff Skinner to tie the score (1-1), and Dahlin rifled a shot off the post and into the back of the net on the power play to give Buffalo the 2-1 lead.
Ruotsalainen extended the Sabres lead to two goals, 3-1, with 6:08 gone by in the decisive third period after scoring on a rebound in front of the goal crease.
Bertuzzi finished off a great sequence of passing to pull the Red Wings within one goal (3-2) with a wrister from just outside the slot at the 13:24 mark of the third period. Just a minute and a half later, Bertuzzi tallied the equalizer after dancing his way past the Buffalo defense and finishing past Tokarski.

DET@BUF: Bertuzzi scores down low

"Bert's a hell of a player. He's a hell of a competitor, he's a great person, but he's a hell of a player," Blashill said. "I don't know if he gets his due all of the time for as good of a player as he is. He's had a big impact in the games he's played in, for sure, and tonight he had a huge impact."
Seider's game-winner came with just 2:15 remaining in the extra period, and was assisted by Bertuzzi, his fifth helper of the season.
Detroit rallied from a two-goal deficit on the road for an overtime win for the second time this season. The Red Wings also won in overtime at Washington on Oct. 27.
Detroit will start a four-game homestand on Sunday evening with a matchup against the Vegas Golden Knights. Puck drop from Little Caesars Arena is set for 6 p.m.
