How it happened

NYI@BUF: Mittelstadt capitalizes on 2-on-1

On a 2-on-1 with Rasmus Asplund, Mittelstadt elected to shoot and beat Sorokin to open the scoring with 7:49 remaining in the first period.
Barzal tied the game with 2:51 left in the opening frame when he connected on a one-timer that beat Tokarski.

Dahlin gave Buffalo the lead back at the 1:17 mark of the second period when he slapped home a shot from the point on the power play.
Thompson then unloaded a shot 2:48 later from the top of the left faceoff circle to make it 3-1.

NYI@BUF: Bjork to Hinostroza makes it 4-1

Hinostroza put the moves on in front and roofed the puck top shelf to put the Sabres up three with 7:15 left in the period.
Dobson cut in to beat Tokarski at the 8:45 mark of the third period to make it 4-2. The Islanders got within one when Pulock's point shot found its way across the goal line with 9:38 to play.

Worthy of a mention

• Thompson became the first Sabre to score 37 goals in a season since Skinner hit 40 in 2018-19. Only three other Sabres have potted at least 37 goals since 2006-07 (Skinner, Chris Drury and Thomas Vanek, who did it twice).
• Before the game, the Sabres recalled Aaron Dell from the Rochester Americans to serve as Tokarski's backup. Craig Anderson is day-to-day with an injury.
