20210126 Eichel Goal Celebration Final Horn 01

The Buffalo Sabres erased two deficits on Tuesday and ultimately came away with a 3-2 victory over the New York Rangers at KeyBank Center.
Jack Eichel scored what proved to be the game-winning goal 7:31 into the second period on the power play. Dylan Cozens and Tobias Rieder also scored for Buffalo.
The Rangers' goal scorers were Chris Kreider and K'Andre Miller, who recorded his first career goal.
Linus Ullmark made 28 saves in net for Buffalo to pick up his second straight win while Alexandar Georgiev stopped 21 shots for the Rangers.
The Sabres' power play went 2-for-4 on the night and their penalty kill was a perfect 3-for-3.

What happened

The Rangers struck first, capitalizing on a strong forecheck. Pavel Buchnevich chased down a loose puck behind the net, curled around the cage and hit Kreider in stride as we rushed into the zone. Kreider beat Ullmark with a wrist shot 6:28 into the opening period.
Buffalo tied the game with 7:10 left in the first on the power play. The Sabres' second unit won the draw and moved the puck around well. Rasmus Ristolainen passed it over to Eric Staal, who then hit Cozens in the slot with a feed. Cozens ripped a hard low shot in on Georgiev's blocker side for the second goal of his career.
Cozens last played on Friday, when he scored his first NHL goal.
Ristolainen, playing in his 500th NHL game, recorded an assist on Cozens' goal. He trails Bill Hajt by 13 points for sixth-most by a defenseman in Sabres history.
K'Andre Miller put New York back in the lead with a slap shot from the point through traffic with 6.1 seconds remaining in the opening frame.
With a Rangers power play coming to an end at the start of the second period, Rieder hunted down a loose puck along the benches and streaked down the wing on a breakaway. He cut in and slipped the puck in over the goal line to tie the game 2-2 at the 6:03 mark of the second.
Eichel gave Buffalo its first lead of the night with his power-play goal just 1:28 later. Set up in the zone, Buffalo's first unit worked the puck around and Rasmus Dahlin eventually fed it down low to Victor Olofsson, who then got the puck to Eichel.

With 1:37 left in the third period, Taylor Hall was sent to the box for boarding, setting up a 6-on-4 advantage for the Rangers. The Sabres penalty kill held strong and sealed the victory.

Worth a mention

With tonight's goal, Eichel tied Jochen Hecht for the 19th-most goals in franchise history (138). He now trails Drew Stafford by seven goals for 18th.
Sabres defenseman Matt Irwin made his debut with the Sabres on Tuesday. Henri Jokiharju missed the game due to an injury. He's considered day-to-day.
Irwin assisted on Rieder's goal and we're going to share that one with you here, too, because why not:
