How it happened

The Sabres controlled play for large portions of the first period, earning lopsided advantages in shots (15-7) and scoring chances (17-5, according to Natural Stat Trick). They were unable to put one past Ullmark, who stretched through the crease to rob Dylan Cozens on a rebound attempt.
Pastrnak opened the scoring for Boston at 3:49 of the period, the product of a strong forecheck from linemates Marchand and Patrice Bergeron. A tic-tac-toe passing sequence from Hall and Coyle led to Nosek's goal at 15:50.
Marchand found a seam to set up Coyle's power-play goal, which extended the Boston lead to 3-0 at 5:17 of the second period. The score snapped Buffalo's 9-for-9 stretch on the penalty kill to open the season.
Olofsson put the Sabres on the board with 5:25 remaining in the third period, beating Ullmark with a shot from the right faceoff circle. The Sabres drew a late penalty for a chance cut the deficit further but were unable to convert. They finished the night 0-for-4 with the extra man.
Hall capped the scoring with an empty-net goal with 1:48 remaining.
