Tobias Rieder scored during a lopsided victory for Germany while Canada was upset by host country Latvia during the opening day of play at the IIHF World Championship.
Germany plays again Saturday, while Sweden (Victor Olofsson), the United States (Tage Thompson), and Finland (Arttu Ruotsalainen) open their tournaments.

Rieder roofed a backhand shot from in tight to put the Germans ahead 3-2 during the second period, the second of seven straight goals they scored after falling behind 2-1.

Sabres prospect J-J Peterka did not play.

Latvia 2 - Canada 0

Latvia goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks posted a 38-save shutout in the country's first-ever win over Canada at any event. Colin Miller, who was named an alternate captain for Canada, skated a team-high 21:35 and tallied seven shots.
