One burning question will remain on the minds of Buffalo Sabres fans between now and the start of the NHL Draft on Oct. 6: Who will be available when the team selects eighth overall?
According to Dan Marr, the director of the NHL's Central Scouting Services, eighth is a pretty good place to be.
"The top eight is where you want to be if you want to get a marquee prospect," Marr said. "Not every club is going to have the same order, so they could conceivably get somebody who they have five or six on their list and they're going to be tickled pink to be able to do that.
"I know they've really been working hard preparing. They probably are going to have to get their eyes checked after watching so much video they had collected on these prospects. They're going to get a marquee NHL prospect here."
Alexis Lafreniere is the consensus favorite to be selected first overall. After him, most projections have forwards Quinton Byfield and Tim Stutzle going second and third in some order - though, as we have seen in recent years, those projections are never a guarantee.
Neither is this one. But, over the coming days we can do our best to profile some of the candidates who might be available when the Sabres pick. We continue today with forward Jack Quinn.

Jack Quinn - LW, Ottawa (OHL)

6-foot-0, 176 pounds

2019-20: 62 GP, 52 G, 37 A, 89 P

We covered the OHL's most prolific point producer already in Ottawa center Marco Rossi. Now it's time to talk about one of the league's most potent goal scorers.
Quinn - who played with Rossi in Ottawa - saw his draft stock catapult with his goal scoring numbers, jumping from 12 in 2018-19 to 52 last season. That number ranked second in the league behind Nick Robertson, a second-round pick by Toronto in 2019.
Going back to 2009-10, only three other OHL players have scored 50-plus goals in their first season of draft eligibility: Arthur Kaliyev, Alex DeBrincat, and current Sabres winger Jeff Skinner.
The Athletic's Corey Pronman, who has Quinn ranked 16th on his list, told Sabres.com that Quinn is receiving top-10 consideration by teams as a result. Sportsnet's Sam Cosentino has Quinn being selected 10th in his latest mock draft.
NHL Central Scouting Services ranks Quinn seventh among North American skaters and fifth among forwards.

What they're saying

Rossi on being teammates with Quinn: "We talked a lot together. We always pushed each other on the ice, off the ice. Jack, he's a really good teammate. He's a really good guy. He improved so much. … He's such a good skater, a good shooter. He works so hard in practice, off the ice with workouts and he's a really good team guy."
NHL.com's Adam Kimelman, in his latest mock draft: "Quinn's 52 goals in 62 games place him among the best pure goal-scorers in this year's draft. His skating got better as the season went on, and he's confident it will continue to improve as he gets better off-ice training at the pro level. He is already strong enough to win battles along the wall and is tough to knock off the puck."

What he's saying

Quinn on the increase in his goal totals: "I think there's a lot of factors that kind of went into it. I think it started with a great summer in the gym and, you know, that led to me feeling in good shape and being a lot more confident in myself. I think my skating improved a bit and a little more ice time, a little more confidence, and the puck started going in."
Quinn on who he plays like in the NHL: "A couple guys that came to mind would be (Boston forward David) Pastrnak - I like his game - and (Washington forward) T.J. Oshie as well."

Watch this

Quinn chalked up his increase in goals in part to an increased willingness to attack the net, a factor that was evident in his hat trick against Hamilton on Jan. 15.
Quinn (No. 22 in red) eludes a defender to score his first goal on the rush (0:57), pounces on a loose puck in the blue paint while shorthanded (1:10), and completes the hat trick with a power-play shot from the inner edge of the right faceoff circle (1:45).
