How it happened

PERIOD 1
The Kraken jumped out to a 2-0 lead just 5:39 into the contest. Jami Oleksiak opened the scoring from the high slot, followed by a breakaway goal from Morgan Geekie.
Seattle went on to earn an 11-5 edge in shots through the first 20 minutes.
PERIOD 2
Daniel Sprong capitalized on a turnover in the Buffalo zone and scored on a breakaway to extend the Kraken's lead to 3-1 just 4:46 into the period.

BUF@SEA: Cozens sends rebound back into the net

Cozens pushed a rebound over the goal line to put the Sabres on the board at 12:25, but Jared McCann buried a power-play goal to restore the Kraken's three-goal lead less than four minutes later.
PERIOD 3
The Sabres appeared to gain momentum when Jack Quinn scored from a tough angle during a 6-on-4 advantage, which would have cut the deficit to 4-2 with the Sabres set to begin a fresh power play.
Video replay ruled the goal was scored after an offside entry, instead leaving the Sabres with 33 seconds at 5-on-3. The Kraken successfully killed both penalties, improving to 4-for-4 on the night.
Beniers scored a power-play goal to extend the Kraken's lead to 5-1 with 10:15 remaining.

What we learned

1.Sabres coach Don Granato said the lesson to take from the loss will be learning to play efficiently on nights when the team has less than its best from an energy standpoint.
"We played a team that had much more energy, played with more intent than we did tonight," he said. "You've got to look and look inside yourself and say, 'OK, how can I play more efficient? Even if I didn't feel good, even if I didn't have the energy to match, how do I play a little smarter, a little bit more efficient?'
"We didn't adjust that way and that's a takeaway we'll have to learn from, progress from, because these nights happen in the NHL."

2. Sabres captain Kyle Okposo echoed his coach, expressing confidence in the team's ability to rebound.
"This is just going to be a small blip," he said. "We'll look at a couple things. If you look at our six games, it's an outlier. So, like I said, as long as this doesn't become part of the norm for our team we're going to be OK. That's going to happen to everybody. Nobody's going to overreact to that one."

3.Cozens was asked to assess the road trip in its totality.
"Obviously on the road playing some good teams, 3-1 is pretty good but we know we could have been 4-0," he said. "It sucks to leave it on a loss. But we learned a lot on this trip. We know what type of team we are in this league and we know we compete every single night. We just need to be focused and come out prepared."

POSTGAME: Cozens

4. Rasmus Dahlin earned the secondary assist on Cozens' goal, extending his season-opening point streak to six games. His nine points lead the Sabres.
5. With the primary assist on Cozen's goal Vinnie Hinostroza recorded his team-leading fifth assist. He has five assists in four games played.
