DENVER -When down a man, no Buffalo Sabres player has been as dangerous as Evan Rodrigues this season. He added his third shorthanded assist of the season on Zach Bogosian's second-period go-ahead goal in last night's shootout loss to the Chicago Blackhawks.
He's tied for 14th in the NHL with three shorthanded points. Bogosian made an incredible move to finish off the play - and it's one Rodrigues almost didn't see live. After he made the pass to Bogosian inside the zone, he headed to the bench for a change.

"I knew we had a 2-on-1, 2-on-2 rush coming. I cut to the middle and I saw the third guy come to me. I didn't really see Bogo," Rodrigues said after Friday's practice at Pepsi Center. "I saw a white shape over there and then stopped up and found him. I figured he was just going to kind of shoot it and peel back, but he makes a hell of a play.
"I'm actually going for a line change. I was just shocked. It was an unbelievable play by him. …It was a sick goal so I obviously went to celebrate with him."
He broke down his earlier chances on the penalty kill with Martin Biron in the latest episode of Tablet Talk:

Tablet Talk: Evan Rodrigues

"I've been fortunate of a couple good plays from our D-men on the first two. That one, you try to take advantage of them. You try to read off what's going on," Rodrigues said Friday.
"There are times where you probably have more opportunities to go for 2-on-1s and stuff like that. But usually on a PK, you're out there for 30, 40 seconds and then the opportunity comes and you don't really have the energy to go for a rush. You just dump it out and get off. It's a little bit of a timing thing, a little luck, but you try to take advantage of it when you get those opportunities."
Rodrigues is fourth among Sabres forwards in average shorthanded ice time this season. Over the last 10 games, he's been second among forwards, behind only Zemgus Girgensons. Buffalo's penalty kill is fifth in the NHL at 83.0 percent.
"He has a really good innate ability to sense an opportunity and he has very, very good speed," Sabres coach Phil Housley said. "His hockey IQ comes through in those situations of just knowing when to jump and when to attack and maybe in some of those situations where he doesn't have an opportunity, he folds back, but he's been really good on the penalty kill."
They'll have their hands full Saturday afternoon when they go up against the Colorado Avalanche and their seventh-ranked power play (clicking at 22.5 percent). Colorado is coming off a 4-0 loss in Dallas on Thursday.
Faceoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET on MSG and WGR 550 with the GMC Game Night pregame show starting at 2:30 on MSG.

Friday's practice

AFTER PRACTICE: Housley

During line rushes at Pepsi Center, Housley tinkered a little bit with the combinations and defensive pairings.
Casey Mittelstadt moved to the left wing on a line with center Johan Larsson and right wing Jason Pominville. Rasmus Dahlin practiced alongside Rasmus Ristolainen while Marco Scandella skated on a pair with Casey Nelson. Tage Thompson practiced as the extra forward on a defensive pair with Matt Hunwick.
Housley said he just wanted to see what those changes would look like on the ice. He and the coaching staff will evaluate everything before tomorrow afternoon's game.
Mittelstadt's move to the wing might help him in his defensive assignments as he works through his first full NHL season.
"It's a possibility. I think Casey's done a good job trying to improve that area of his game," Housley said. "I thought last game, there was a lot of indecision in his game and the communication aspect of it needs to come through, sorting things out. Again, we'll look at it and see where it is tomorrow."
