Deadline Day recap

TRADE DEADLINE RECAP

The trade with the Bruins was made official early Monday morning and that marked the only move Buffalo made that day before the Trade Deadline hit at 3 p.m.
Buffalo previously traded goaltender Jonas Johansson to Colorado for a sixth-round pick, forward Eric Staal to Montreal for third- and fifth-round picks and defenseman Brandon Montour to Florida for a third-round pick.
The Sabres now have 10 picks in the 2021 NHL Draft, which is set for July 23-24. However, that doesn't mean general manager Kevyn Adams is going to actually make all of those selections. For him, it was about accumulating assets that can be spent in different ways.

KEVYN ADAMS

"That was definitely the plan," Adams said. "One takeaway that I had last year in a short time preparing for the draft was it is hard to go into the draft short-handed. Draft picks are currency, and besides building your pipeline, which I think has been lacking, you can also use that currency in other ways.
"You can package picks together to potentially acquire players. You can package picks together to move up in the draft. Maybe we need some pick for expansion reasons to help yourself. So, it definitely was a strategy going in once our team got to the point where we were not where we needed to be in the standings."
