SAN JOSE, Calif. – San Jose Sharks (@SanJoseSharks) General Manager Mike Grier announced today that the club has acquired a 2024 third-round selection and defenseman Jack Thompson from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for forward Anthony Duclair and San Jose’s 2025 seventh-round selection.

Thompson, 21, has appeared in 46 American Hockey League (AHL) games this season for the Syracuse Crunch, recording 32 points (five goals, 27 assists) along with 12 penalty minutes. At the time of the trade, Thompson ranks second on Syracuse in points and assists, and leads team defensemen in both categories and is second in goals. He made his NHL debut with Tampa on Jan. 6, 2024. Over two AHL seasons, he has appeared in 118 games, recording 56 points (13 goals, 43 assists).

Prior to his professional career, Thompson played in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) for three seasons with the Sudbury Wolves and Soo Greyhounds, appearing in 180 games and scoring 105 points (40 goals, 65 assists). He was served as captain for Sudbury in the 2021-22 season and led the league in goals by defensemen (21). He was named to the OHL Second All-Star team.

Internationally, he has represented Team Canada at the 22 World Junior Championships, where he helped Canada to a Gold Medal, collecting four points (one goal, three assists) across seven games.  

The six-foot-one, 189-pound native of Courtice, Ontario was originally selected by Tampa Bay in the 2020 NHL Draft (third round, 93rd overall).

Duclair, 28, was acquired by San Jose from Florida on July 1, 2023, in exchange for forward Steven Lorentz and the Sharks’ fifth-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft. 

In 56 games with San Jose this season, Duclair tied Fabian Zetterlund for the Sharks’ goal-scoring lead (16) and paced the club in even strength goals (11). He led the team in scoring after the All-Star break with 10 points and seven goals, including a career-high four points (two goals, two assists) on March 5 against Dallas as one of three multi-point games following the break. He had eight points (five goals, three assists) in his final four games in teal, seven (four goals, three assists) coming in his final two games at SAP Center. 

Over the course of his NHL career with the New York Rangers, Arizona Coyotes, Chicago Blackhawks, Columbus Blue Jackets, Ottawa Senators, Florida Panthers, and Sharks, Duclair has appeared in 546 games, recording 288 points (138 goals, 150 assists). He was originally selected by New York in the 2013 NHL Draft (third round, 80th overall).
