Burns has recorded 529 points (177 goals, 352 assists) and 591 penalty minutes in 919 career NHL games with Minnesota and San Jose. This is his fifth career All-Star Game appearance (2011, 2015, 2016, and 2017), and his fourth as a member of the Sharks.
Burns was awarded the James Norris Memorial Trophy, presented annually to the defenseman who demonstrates the greatest all-round ability in the position throughout the season, for the 2016-17 season. He also represented and won gold with Team Canada in the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.
The 6-foot-5, 230-pound native of Barrie, Ontario, was originally drafted by Minnesota in the first round (20th overall) of the 2003 NHL Draft. He was acquired by San Jose via trade in June 2011.
