In 61 games with the Charlotte Checkers (AHL) in 2019-20, Lorentz collected 46 points (23 goals, 23 assists). He was also a member of Charlotte's Calder Cup-winning team in 2018-19.
He was originally drafted by Carolina in the seventh round (186th overall) of the 2015 NHL Draft.
"Steven provides our line-up some size and flexibility at the forward position," said Grier. "He has been a productive offensive player at the American Hockey league level and we feel he will bring some needed ingredients into our line-up."
Makiniemi, 23, appeared in 14 games last season with the Chicago Wolves (AHL), posting an 11-2-1 record with a 2.06 goals-against average and a .922 save percentage and tow shutouts, winning the last six games that he started. Chicago went on to capture the 2022 Calder Cup Championship but Makiniemi did not play due to injury.
Originally selected by Carolina in the fourth round (104th overall) in the 2017 NHL Draft, Makiniemi spent the 2020-21 season with Ilves (Liiga) in Finland, where he posted a 13-14-7 record, 2.59 goals-against average, .907 save percentage and two shutouts in 34 appearances.
The six-foot-three, 195-pound native of Vantaa, Finland spent the majority of the season with Kovee (Mestis) in Finland, where he had a 14-4-8 record, 3.01 goals-against average, .908 save percentage and one shutout in 27 appearances. He finished second in Mestis in save percentage, third in wins and sixth in goals-against average and was named Mestis Best Goaltender and Mestis Second All-Star Team. He also registered a 2-0-4 record, 1.53 goals-against average and .936 save percentage in seven Liiga appearances with Ilves.

The conditional 2023 selection will be the lower of Carolina's two third round picks, which will be determined at the conclusion of the 2022-23 season.
Burns leaves the Sharks ranked at or near the top of several franchise statistical categories, including games played (798; 5th overall, 2nd among defenseman), goals (172; 7th overall, 1st among defensemen), assists (422; 3rd overall, 1st among defensemen), points (594; 5th overall, 1st among defensemen), penalty minutes (438; 12th overall, 4th among defensemen), power play goals (7th overall; 1st among defensemen), game-winning goals (27; T-7th overall, 1st among defensemen) and shots (2643; 3rd overall, 1st among defensemen).
Named to three NHL All-Star Teams (1st team 2016-17 and 2018-19; 2nd Team 2015-16), Burns won the 2016-2017 James Norris Trophy as the league's top defenseman and was a finalist for the award in 2015-16 and 2018-19. He has been selected to play in the NHL All-Star Game six times.

Pederson appeared in 29 games with the Sharks last season, posting two assists and ten penalty minutes.
