Over the course of his professional career at both the NHL and AHL level, he has appeared in 110 NHL games, scoring 23 points (10 goals, 13 assists) and 66 games with the San Jose Barracuda, San Jose's top developmental affiliate in the AHL, recording 57 points (23 goals, 34 assists).
Prior to his professional career, he appeared in 120 games for the University of Denver, scoring 132 points (43 goals, 89 assists). During the 2017-18 season, he was named as a 2018 Hobey Baker nominee, which is awarded to the top National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) men's ice hockey player. Gambrell also helped lead the Pioneers to the 2017 NCAA championship title. In 7 tournament games (conference and NCAA), he was tied for second on his team in points (7), fourth in assists (5), rating (+8), and shots (18), and tied for fourth in goals (2). Among several accolades and achievements, he was named to the NCAA Second All-Star Team twice (2016-17, 2017-18), and named to the NCAA All-Rookie Team, ranking second amongst all NCHC freshmen in goals (17), assists (30), points (47), and shots (107).
Gambrell was also a Clark Cup Champion as a rookie with the Dubuque Fight Saints of the USHL in 2012-13. In that season, Gambrell was tied for the lead in points (27), and second in goals (9) and assists (18) amongst Fighting Saints rookies.
The six-foot, 195-pound native of Bonny Lake, Washington, was selected by San Jose in the 2016 NHL Draft (2nd round, 60th overall).
