San Jose Sharks (

) General Manager Mike Grier announced today that the club has signed forward Givani Smith to a two-year contract worth $1.6 million ($800,000 average annual value).

"Givani is a big, physical winger with high energy and we are excited to add him to our group for next season," said Grier.

Smith, 25, recorded four points (one goal, three assists) and 72 penalty minutes in 36 games with the Florida Panthers and Detroit Red Wings in 2022-23. Smith played in his 100th career NHL game on Jan. 28 at Boston. He also appeared in one playoff game with Florida on their trip to the 2023 Stanley Cup Final and played 22 American Hockey League (AHL) games with the Grand Rapids Griffins and Charlotte Checkers, registering five points (two goals, three assists).

Smith has compiled 18 points (eight goals, 10 assists) and 210 penalty minutes in 119 career NHL games between Detroit and Florida. The forward set career highs in games played (46), goals (four), assists (three), points (seven) and penalty minutes (108) with the Red Wings in 2021-22, with his penalty minute total standing as a team high. Smith has skated in 151 AHL contests in his career, logging 52 points (26 goals, 26 assists) and 266 penalty minutes.

The six-foot-two, 214-pound native of Toronto, Ontario was originally selected by Detroit in the 2016 NHL Draft (second round, 46th overall).
