Story of the Day

The Capitals visit the Boston Bruins tonight for the first of three meetings between the teams this season. The Capitals will host the Bruins at Capital One Arena on Dec. 31 before concluding the season series at TD Garden on April 1. In 2023-24, Washington earned at least one point in all three games against Boston, taking the season series 2-0-1. In the Capitals’ lone visit to TD Garden last season, Charlie Lindgren stopped all 18 shots faced in a 3-0 win on Feb. 10. Dylan Strome led the Capitals with three points (1g, 2a) in three games against the Bruins in 2023-24. Washington has won two of its last three games in Boston.

With their 3-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Monday, the Capitals (23-8-2, 48 points) moved back into first place in the Metropolitan Division and Eastern Conference. The Capitals, who have been without captain Alex Ovechkin since Nov. 21, can reach the 50-point mark with a win tonight. It would tie for the third fewest games needed to record 50 points in franchise history.

Washington lost its first two games without Ovechkin in the lineup but are 10-2-1 since. The Capitals have averaged 2.31 goals against in their last 13 contests dating back to Nov. 25, the fourth-lowest average in the NHL in that span.
