5 takeaways: Multi-goal lead disappears in spiraling third period

DALLAS --The Stars will have plenty of time to absorb their stunning loss to the Flames.
It should've been a feel-good win against a team they're trying to leapfrog in the standings. Instead, it was one of their worst losses of the season.

Here are the five takeaways of the game.

THIRD PERIOD MELTDOWN

The Stars had a good thing going for 40 minutes, but it all came crashing down in the third.
They stopped attacking and instead found themselves holding on for dear life in crunch time when the Flames made their push. The Stars never recovered after Andrew Mangiapane made it 3-2 because 37 seconds later Johnny Gaudreau tied the game and Oliver Kylington delivered the dagger shortly after.

OUTSHOT 41-28

That was the final tally at the end of the game, and the Stars were outshot badly in the third. The Flames had 18 shots to the Stars' five in the final frame. Compare that to the second period when Dallas had 17, and you can get a feel for how tilted the ice was in the third.

A FIRST FOR HANLEY

Skating in his 100th career regular-season game, the likeable defenseman potted his first career regular-season goal. It came off a point shot that changed direction on the way to the net.

Joel Hanley's first career NHL goal came in Game 1 of the 2020 Stanley Cup Final vs. Tampa Bay, a 4-1 Stars win.

ROBERTSON'S SNIPE

Jason Robertson's goal in the late stages of the first period was the latest highlight of his incredible season. It marked his 17th goal in 35 games this season, tying his career high from 2020-21.

Robertson's been especially dominant at home, his goal giving him points in 13 of his previous 14 home games (seven goals, 12 assists).

PLENTY OF TIME TO THINK ABOUT IT

After what transpired Tuesday, you almost wish the Stars had another game before the break. But instead of having a chance to get right back at it in a few days, the Stars won't play again until Wednesday, Feb. 9 against Nashville.
