The 6-foot-5, 216-pound defenseman spent the majority of the 2021-22 campaign with Leksand of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL), posting three points (one goal, two assists) in 29 games. He also appeared in 11 games with Leksand's junior team, earning seven points (three goals, four assists).

"It's just an amazing feeling," said Bichsel. "I'm a bit surprised to go to Dallas, but I'm proud to be a Dallas player."

On the international stage, the Olten, Switzerland native has represented his country at the 2021 Under-18 World Championship and at the 2021 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, where he served as team captain.

Bichsel becomes just the second Swiss-born defenseman to be drafted in the first round, following Mirco Mueller (also 18th overall, San Jose) in 2013.

Scouting report from NHL Central Scouting

A big, physically strong defenseman who has improved a lot since taking a regular spot in the Swedish Hockey League. Surprisingly mature game for his age. Moves well for a player of his size. Plays a safe, solid two-way game. Moves the puck well with a quick first pass. A good, honest competitor at his best when he keeps his game safe and simple. A consistent player who plays at the same high level game after game. Solid and at times aggressive in front of the net. Wins battles using his size and vision. Plays with a lot of confidence.
