Maybe it took a few games for Team USA to find its groove, but the players wearing red, white and blue are certainly firing on all cylinders now. Two days after earning a resounding victory over Canada, the United States skated to a 3-0 victory over Kazakhstan on Tuesday at the 2021 IIHF Men's World Championship in Riga, Latvia.

Facing an undefeated Kazakhstan squad, Team USA worked methodically and systematically. The U.S. registered 52 shots on goal, including 25 in the first period alone -- the most ever in any period for Team USA in the world championship. Kazakhstan, meanwhile, finished the game with 18 shots on goal. With the win, the U.S. improved to 2-0-0-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L) in the preliminary round.

Stars left wing Jason Robertson found his way onto the scoresheet for the third consecutive game, earning the primary assist on Adam Clendening's goal to open the scoring at the 6:57 mark of the first period. The assist gave Robertson four points (2g/2a) in three games, placing him a tie with Trevor Moore (three goals, one assist) for the team lead in scoring.

Cal Petersen was named Team USA's best player of the game for his 18-save performance, the first shutout in a world championship game for the U.S. since May 7, 2018 when Keith Kinkaid stopped all 24 shots in a 3-0 victory over Germany.
Moore and Jack Drury rounded out the scoring for Team USA, which resumes action on Thursday, May 27 against host Latvia in the fourth of seven preliminary round games. Puck drop is slated for 8:15 a.m. CT and can be seen on NHL Network.
NOTE: Jake Oettinger served as backup to Petersen. Texas Stars defenseman Ryan Shea didn't dress for the game and has yet to make his debut in the tournament.
