Selected by the Stars in the fifth round (129th overall) of the 2007 NHL Draft, the 33-year-old has spent his entire 14-year NHL career with Dallas. He was named the sixth captain in Dallas Stars history (1993-present) on Sept. 19, 2013 and is the longest tenured player to wear the "C" in Stars history. Benn sits among the franchise's leaders in nearly every statistical category, ranking second in goals (348), third in assists (465) and points (348-465-813) and second in even-strength goals (236) and even-strength points (236-330-566). He also ranks third in shorthanded goals (14) and shorthanded points (14-12-26), shares fourth in power-play tallies (98) and ranks sixth in power-play points (98-123-221). Benn also holds the franchise mark for overtime goals (11) and ranks second in game winners (53) and shots on goal (2,672).
"The organization is extremely fortunate to have Jamie wear its sweater for 14 seasons," said Stars Owner and Governor Tom Gaglardi. "Jamie is one of the best players in our franchise's history and is the definition of a leader. My family would like to send our congratulations on his tremendous accomplishment."
Since donning the "C," Benn is the fifth-longest active tenured captain after Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby, Chicago's Jonathan Toews, Washington's Alex Ovechkin and Colorado's Gabriel Landeskog.
Benn recorded career point No. 800 (342-458-800) with an assist on Dec. 21, 2022 against Edmonton. He became the third player in franchise history to reach the mark, joining Mike Modano (557-802-1,359) and Neal Broten (274-593-867).
"Serving as team captain for 10 seasons is a testament to Jamie's leadership, professionalism and commitment," said Stars General Manager Jim Nill. "His impact on the game goes far beyond our locker room. As one of the most respected players across the NHL, reaching the 1,000-game mark is a significant achievement for Jamie and his tireless dedication to this sport. The Stars organization would like to congratulate Jamie for everything he's done for this team."
Benn became the first player in franchise history to win the Art Ross Trophy as the NHL's leading scorer for the 2014-15 regular season. He led the NHL with 87 points (35-52-87) in 82 regular-season games, finishing just one point ahead of John Tavares, who was with the New York Islanders at the time. Benn earned 23 points (12-11-23) in the final 12 games of the regular season, posting three-or-more points five times over that span, including a three-goal four-point (3-1-4) game in the regular-season finale to win the trophy.
In the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Benn ranks third in Dallas Stars history in points (20-31-51), fourth in assists (31), fifth in goals (20) and 10th in games played (66). He was instrumental in guiding the Stars to the 2020 Stanley Cup Final, sharing third among team leaders in goals (8), assists (11) and points (8-11-19) in 27 games, all postseason career highs.
