"We're just looking to continue to get better in our puck possession game and special teams, especially," Montgomery said. "We're starting to see the players who are going to play special teams, so now execution and effort are really going to be important in building momentum."
The Stars are expected to roll out their top power-play unit of Benn, Seguin, Radulov, Jason Spezza, and John Klingberg. In Thursday's practice, the second unit was Mattias Janmark, Roope Hintz, Devin Shore, Esa Lindell, and Miro Heiskanen.
Landon Bow will get the start in goal. Anton Khudobin was the scheduled starter, but he is out with a minor injury. Khudobin did not practice Friday, and neither did forward Valeri Nichushkin, who also is out with a minor injury. Brett Ritchie, who missed Thursday's practice, was back on the ice Friday morning.
Montgomery had no update on defenseman Stephen Johns, who has been out with an undisclosed injury and has yet to play a preseason game.
"Every day [the level of concern] grows as we get closer to Oct. 4," Montgomery said. "There's nothing we can do. You've got to wait for someone to feel right themselves most importantly. It's not a doctor issue, but it's most important that whenever a player comes back that they feel right, so they're comfortable on the ice, and they can execute."
Also, defensemen Dillon Heatherington and Reece Scarlett cleared waivers Friday morning and were assigned to the AHL on Friday afternoon.
