Story of the Day
The Capitals host the Toronto Maple Leafs tonight at Capital One Arena for the first of three meetings between the teams this season. Washington has won seven of its last eight games at home and have a 7-2-0 record (.778 P%) at Capital One Arena this season. The Capitals rank second in the NHL in goals for at home (39) and tied for third in home wins.
The Capitals bolstered their roster on Tuesday by reacquiring center Lars Eller from the Pittsburgh Penguins for Washington’s third-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft and a fifth-round pick (originally from Chicago) in the 2025 NHL Draft. Eller, who is not expected to play tonight, spent seven seasons with Washington from 2016 to 2023 (87g-121a–208p in 488 GP). The 6’2”, 208-pound center was a key member of the 2018 Stanley Cup winning team recording 18 points (7g, 11a) in 24 playoff games, including the Cup-clinching goal in Game 5 of the Final against the Vegas Golden Knights.
In 17 games with Pittsburgh this season, Eller has registered seven points (4g, 3a) and owns a 56.0 face-off win percentage, which ranks tied for 15th in the NHL (min. 150 face-offs taken). In addition, Eller ranked third among Penguins forwards in shorthanded ice time per game (2:08) and fifth in ice time per game (16:25).
