Johnson, 24, recorded one assist in 15 games with the Chicago Blackhawks and 31 points (18-13=31) and 34 penalty minutes (PIM) in 53 games with the Rockford IceHogs in the American Hockey League (AHL) last season. The 5-foot-11, 198-pound native of Grand Forks, N.D., made his NHL debut in Chicago's season-opener at Ottawa on Oct. 4 and tallied his first NHL point with an assist at Vancouver on Oct. 31. He ranked third on the IceHogs in goals and T-4th with four power-play tallies. Johnson has notched 78 points (39-39=78) and 127 PIM in 199 career AHL games with Rockford and eight points (4-4=8) in 13 career Calder Cup Playoff matches.
The right-shot tallied 66 points (30-36=66) and 125 PIM in 127 games during three seasons at the University of North Dakota (2013-16) including 21 points (11-10=21) in 43 games during his junior season to help North Dakota win the 2016 NCAA National Championship. Johnson won 62-of-101 (61.4%) face-offs in seven postseason games and was named to the NCAA Midwest Region All-Tournament Team. He collected 101 points (39-62=101) and 84 PIM in 112 games during two seasons (2011-13) with the Lincoln Stars in the United States Hockey League (USHL).
Chicago selected Johnson in the fifth round (134th overall) of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.
