Nelson, a sixth grade science teacher at Hidden Oaks Middle School in Prior Lake, Minnesota,was selected as the Minnesota Wild Teacher of the Month in February and chosen at random from a pool of five finalists for the Teacher of the Year Award. All finalists participated in Future Goals Program, a NHL and National Hockey League Players' Association (NHLPA) initiative.
The Future Goals Program is a custom, online learning program that leverages the game of hockey to teach critical science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills to students in grades 4-7. The Hockey Scholar course is privately labeled for each NHL Club, within their market, to highlight players from their team, along with team branding and color schemes throughout the student learning experience. Students gain an understanding of foundational STEM concepts, develop scientific and critical thinking skills, and are introduced to STEM related careers in hockey.
