SAINT PAUL, Minn. --The Twin Cities chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association (PHWA) today announced the nomination of Minnesota Wild forward Mason Shaw for the National Hockey League's (NHL) Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. The trophy is presented annually to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.

Shaw, 24, tallied 17 points (7-10=17), 92 shots, 87 hits and 79 penalty minutes (PIM) in 59 games with Minnesota this season. The 5-foot-10, 184-pound native of Wainwright, Alberta, tallied three multi-point games and recorded a point in three consecutive games from December 3 to December 7 (1-3=4). In a game at Vegas on April 1, Shaw suffered a torn ACL and will miss the remainder of the season. This is the third time Shaw has suffered such an injury since the Wild selected him in the fourth round of the 2017 NHL Draft. He also suffered a torn ACL while playing for the Medicine Hat Tigers in the Western Hockey League (WHL).
The left-shot winger spent parts of six seasons (2017-23) with the Iowa Wild in the American Hockey League (AHL), serving as both the Captain and Assistant Captain. Shaw recorded 114 points (39-75=114), a plus-13 rating, 10 power-play goals (PPG) and seven game-winning goals (GWG) over 188 games. He set career-highs in points (52), assists (33) and goals (19) during the 2021-22 season. Shaw suffered a torn ACL at the 2017 Traverse City Prospect Tournament and played in one game with Iowa at the end of the 2017-18 season. He suffered his third ACL tear in game three of a first round Calder Cup Playoff series against Milwaukee, causing him to miss the first half of the 2020-21 season. After appearing in two games with Iowa this season, Shaw was promoted to Minnesota on October 21 and recorded his first NHL goal and assist on October 30 at Chicago.
The winner of the Masterton Trophy is selected by a poll among the 32 chapters of the PHWA at the end of the regular season. NHL writers first presented the trophy in 1968 to commemorate the late Bill Masterton, who played for the Minnesota North Stars and exhibited to a high degree the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey. Masterton died on Jan. 15, 1968, as a result of head injuries suffered during a game.
Jared Spurgeon (2021-22), Matt Dumba (2020-21), Alex Stalock (2019-20), Ryan Suter (2018-19), Matt Cullen (2017-18), Eric Staal (2016-17), Nate Prosser (2015-16), Devan Dubnyk (2014-15), Josh Harding (2013-14, 2012-13), Clayton Stoner (2011-12), Pierre-Marc Bouchard (2010-11), Guillaume Latendresse (2009-10), Kurtis Foster (2008-09), Aaron Voros (2007-08), Marian Gaborik (2006-07), Wes Walz (2005-06, 2000-01), Alexandre Daigle (2003-04), Dwayne Roloson (2002-03) and Richard Park (2001-02) were previously nominated for the award.
