Before puck drop, take a look at five facts about the Roadrunner's fantastic career.
5 - Skill, epitomized
The Montreal Canadiens record book is littered with Cournoyer's name. His legacy includes several top-10 records, including fourth in goals scored (428), seventh in assists (435), sixth in points (863), and second in power-play goals (152).

He was the model of consistency, as evidenced by the fact that he scored 25 goals in 11 consecutive seasons.
4 - Oh Captain, My Captain
Following Henri Richard's retirement in 1975, Yvan Cournoyer was the unanimous choice by the players to take over as captain.

Earlier in his career, Cournoyer had roomed with the legendary Jean Béliveau on the road, giving him the exact type of insight necessary to maintain control of a team filled with superstars.
The Canadiens would go on to win a Stanley Cup during all four seasons in which Cournoyer was captain (1976-79).
3 - Part of Canadian history
Cournoyer participated in the famous 1972 Summit Series versus the USSR, where he finished fourth in scoring among Canadian forwards.
He kept his best for last, scoring the crucial game-tying goal in the third period of the eighth and final game. He can be seen jumping in Paul Henderson's arms in the iconic picture of Team Canada's series-winning goal, a few minutes later.

2 - Meep meep!
Cournoyer was told by many he would not make the NHL due to his relatively diminutive 5'7" size. However, his blazing speed easily compensated for his short stature.
Nicknamed the Roadrunner due to being the fastest player in the League, Cournoyer's legs were so muscular by the time he turned 18 that his pants required special tailoring.

Very few NHL players would end up retiring with more silverware than the four-time All-Star.
Cournoyer won an impressive 10 Stanley Cups as a player, earning the call to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1983. The Canadiens retired his number in 2005, alongside another famous No.12, Dickie Moore.
