Q&A Recap: Jordan Harris

MONTREAL - Jordan Harris has not - and will not - allow his wealth of success get to his head.

Though classified as a rookie this past season, the 22-year-old's on-ice composure reflected maturity beyond his years, and outside the parameters of the Bell Centre rink, the soon-to-be sophomore defenseman's grounded personality does merely the same.

While joining the Canadiens official Twitch account on Wednesday, you'd be hard-pressed to believe Harris didn't restore a few fans' faith in humanity.

The blueliner's response to his King Clancy Memorial Trophy nomination was a breath of fresh air, while his humbling character barely allowed him to take credit for his first NHL goal.

On a local note, the Massachusetts native even mixed in a few words en français, serving yet another reminder that, simply put, Harris gets it.

Jordan Harris on his experience at the 2018 NHL Draft:

I remember it was steaming hot, it was smoking down in Dallas. But definitely a lot of emotion [that day]. During the year there's such a buildup and expectations that you have for yourself, where you might go in the Draft […] Going through the Draft, you know some buddies that are being picked in the first and second rounds there, so you watch through and then you're just waiting anxiously to get your name called. To hear it be called by Montreal was an absolute dream come true. And I wasn't sure it would be Montreal. I had good interviews with them, I guess, but I wasn't really sure. Some teams you know have you ranked higher than others, like, you have a good feeling. Montreal was a bit of a surprise but what a great surprise for sure.

Harris on why he feels giving back to the community is important:

Just because of how I was raised, honestly. I think that having a platform and being a player in the NHL, it's so easy to be a good person. It's so easy to reach out, meet people, say hi and give off that good energy. When you're young, meeting NHL players is the coolest thing ever. I still have photos and stuff and you remember that stuff for a lifetime. Now, being in that position and thinking that I might have some sort of small, positive impact on a young child or on a person of similar upbringing that I do, I just think it's so important. I take it as more of a responsibility to give back and it's huge. My parents always stress that I'm more than just a hockey player. You take your studies seriously and you give back when you get the opportunity, because I feel incredibly fortunate to play for the Habs so, again, I want to be able to have a lasting impact outside of just on the ice.

Harris on what he's most excited for next season:

Honestly, just being back in Montreal and just getting back to camp, competing and seeing the guys. There's a lot of excitement about getting back and getting going again. Being able to have this past year to build off of, now you know kind of the schedule, you know how some of the teams play, you know what's expected of you and how to manage your body better. Honestly, just coming back hungrier than ever, excited and having that knowledge to build off of, that's really exciting. […] I really feel like the sky's the limit for our team. We have so many great players, a great core, and a really supportive management and coaching staff. I really do feel very positive about the team and myself moving forward.

Harris on his biggest mentors on the team:

We have a lot of great mentors. From a defenseman's standpoint, you interact with the D-men more and you play with different guys, so I think you just learn more from them, naturally. I mean, all our vets back there: David Savard, Joel [Edmundson], Mike Matheson. You just pick up little pointers from them, how they succeed and how they've had success for that long. I'd probably say all of them. Then, even our younger guys. Suzy (Nick Suzuki) was great this year as captain and everyone we have in the locker room is super helpful for the young guys. But I think just naturally, you learn more from the defensemen.
