Team Canada Team Germany

A seven-goal second period pulled the Canadians away for good as they defeated Germany 16-2 in their opening game of the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship on Saturday.
Canada, the host nation, received goals from 10 different players and 17 skaters recorded at least a point during the Boxing Day matchup at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta. It was the most goals the country has scored since defeating Latvia 16-0 on Dec. 26, 2009.

Avalanche prospects Alex Newhook, Justin Barron and Bowen Byram were three of the nine Canadians to record multi-point outings in the victory. Newhook had two goals and an assist and finished with a plus-4 rating, while the defensemen Barron and Byram both contributed two helpers apiece. Byram, who was named a co-captain of the squad following team captain Kirby Dach's injury in exhibition play, tied for a squad-high plus-8 rating in the contest.
