Armstrong is currently in his 12th season with the Blues but served as general manager of the Dallas Stars for six seasons prior to that. His teams have posted eight seasons of 90 or more points and have missed the playoffs just three times in his 17 years at the helm.
In 2019, Armstrong became the first general manager in team history to lead the Blues to a Stanley Cup championship.
"It's a tremendous feat to get 500 wins as a GM. He's done a hell of a job his whole career, starting in Dallas," Blues Head Coach Craig Berube said of Armstrong. "He's got great vision of how to build a team, what it takes to build a team. He's got a real good patience, a very smart guy. Nothing really gets by him ever. I've enjoyed working with him, he's been great. When I lost my job in Philadelphia, he gave me an opportunity to get right back in the game with some scouting and things like that, then gave me a job as a coach with the minor league team. He's been great for me and I've learned a lot from him."
Under Armstrong's guidance, the Blues have posted four of the Top 5 regular seasons in team history, captured two Central Division titles and qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs in eight of the last nine seasons. In 2011-12, Armstrong became the first manager in team history to earn the NHL's General Manager of the Year Award.
During his tenure, he has acquired key players such as Ryan O'Reilly, Brayden Schenn, Justin Faulk and Torey Krug and extended the contracts of core players such as Jordan Binnington, Vladimir Tarasenko and Colton Parayko.
In December 2021, Armstrong passed Larry Pleau (486) in wins to become the winningest general manager in Blues history.
