BOSTON - The Boston Bruins and the Boston Bruins Foundation announced today a $50,000 pledge to support Playworks in bringing safe, healthy play to elementary students across New England during the 2019-20 school year.
Playworks provides an unparalleled opportunity to foster the physical, social, and emotional development of our kids. Playworks works to improve the health and well-being of children by increasing opportunities for physical activity and safe, meaningful play. This partnership will expand access to hockey and promote health and wellness for elementary school students through an inclusive and engaging curriculum.

In partnership with the Boston Bruins, Playworks will develop and implement a "BFit with Playworks" fitness curriculum, including warm-ups, stretching, and exercise. Through exposure and coaching, students will gain a better understanding of fitness and physical strength as it relates to activities on and off the playground. These activities will be integrated into recess and used in and outside of school to support students in developing habits conducive to a healthy lifestyle. The BFit with Playworks curriculum will be implemented across 55 high-need elementary schools in Greater Boston reaching 30,000 K-5 students.
"The Boston Bruins Foundation is happy to partner with Playworks to promote health and wellness in elementary schools throughout New England," says Bob Sweeney, President of the Boston Bruins Foundation. "Playworks has a strong proven foundation to improve children's learning capacity utilizing their programs and we are happy to assist in their efforts."
In collaboration with the Boston Bruins, Playworks will develop a street hockey curriculum that Playworks Coaches will implement in partner schools. Over the course of the school year, Playworks Coaches will run "Boston Bruins Hockey Weeks," incorporating hockey skill building and trivia in Playworks programs to generate excitement and support for the Bruins in Boston schools. By providing equipment and training, students will gain exposure to hockey and begin developing the core skills necessary for success.
"We are very excited to partner with the Boston Bruins and the Boston Bruins Foundation," says Jonathan Gay, Playworks New England Executive Director. "They understand the value of physical activity in not only helping our children stay healthy, but as a tool to promote positive social interactions and create an improved overall school climate."
To celebrate the partnership, the Boston Bruins will bring a BFit School Assembly to a Playworks partner school.
