BOSTON, MA -The National Hockey League announced today, March 20, that Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand has been named the NHL first star of the week for the week ending March 19. Pittsburgh Penguins forward Sidney Crosby and Calgary Flames goaltender Brian Elliott were named second and third star of the week, respectively.
Marchand led the league in scoring this week with nine points (five goals, four assists) in three games as the Bruins won two of three games to improve to 38-27-6 (82 points), third in the Atlantic Division. On March 13, Marchand recorded his second career hat trick, including the game-winning goal, and added an assist in the team's 6-3 win at the Vancouver Canucks. On March 15, the 5-foot-9, 181-pound forward posted one goal and one assist in the team's 5-2 win at Calgary, snapping the Flames' franchise-record-tying 10-game win streak. Marchand then netted one goal and two assists in a 7-4 loss at the Edmonton Oilers to close out the Bruins' Western Canada road trip.
Since January 1, Marchand leads the league in goals (27) and points (48). In his eighth season, all with the Bruins, the 28-year-old Halifax, N.S. native leads the Bruins with 37 goals (second in NHL) and 42 assists for 79 points (tied for third in NHL) in 71 games.
