Bruins Fall to Flyers for First Loss of the Season

PHILADELPHIA - Karson Kuhlman, Taylor Hall, and Brad Marchand scored but the Bruins fell to the Philadelphia Flyers, 6-3, on Wednesday night at Wells Fargo Center in the team's first road game of the season. Boston rallied from a two-goal deficit in the second period to tie the game, 3-3, on tallies from Hall and Marchand but surrendered three goals - including an empty-netter - in the third for their first loss of the season. Here are some notes and observations from the loss:

Swayman Takes the Loss

Jeremy Swayman allowed more than three goals for the first time in his career, including two in the third period - one from Cam Atkinson just 58 seconds into the final frame and another from Travis Konecny with 8:43 remaining that sealed things for the Flyers.
"He's not gonna be perfect every night," said Cassidy. "Clearly he wasn't tonight. Not his best. We needed some saves there when we broke down. That's it. Just didn't give us when we needed them. Our breakdowns were bad in front of him. Wasn't a lot of quantity but high quality."
Swayman, who made 19 saves on 24 shots, said he was "accountable for what happened" and will use the setback as a learning experience.
"The team played great, great comeback in the second. I just want to do my job better and give us a chance to win," said Swayman, who went 7-3-0 last season. "It stings right now. Glad I got it out of the way early. Lot to learn from it. Move forward from here."

Miscues Prove Costly

While Cassidy acknowledged Swayman was not at his best against the Flyers, Boston's bench boss also lamented the turnovers and breakdowns that preceded the goals.
"It's losing hockey is what it is," said Cassidy. "That's how you lose games. You do dumb things and good teams come back at you and they finish. That's what happened."
On the Flyers' fourth goal, Mike Reilly attempted a rush through the middle of the ice and had a pass picked off at the Philadelphia blue line. The Flyers pounced and converted on an odd-man rush to take a 4-3 lead just 58 seconds into the third period.
"I feel like I'd make that play most of the time," said Reilly. "Guy got a good stick on it, he jumped. If I probably would have held on to it a second more, I would have had him caught in his feet, but I don't think it was too risky. Just didn't make the play."

Foligno Injured

Nick Foligno left the game late in the second with an upper-body injury and did not return. Cassidy said following the game that Foligno "pulled something" and that the team would re-evaluate him on Thursday.
"Hopefully nothing serious," said Cassidy. "But wasn't able to return so that's never a good sign."
