BOSTON - Jim Montgomery tried to put it all into perspective.
As a kid growing up in Montreal, the Boston bench boss was a fan of the Expos, but his favorite American League team was the Red Sox. Back then, standing in the middle of the field at Fenway Park would have been a dream come true.
So, when Montgomery was doing that very thing on Sunday afternoon, he couldn't help but think of all the people who have had similar visions.

"Unreal," Montgomery mused. "Words that come to mind are thankful, an attitude of gratitude just because you're in Fenway Park and I'm thinking about how many people have dreamt about being in the middle of Fenway Park and here we are getting the opportunity to be part of the Winter Classic in the NHL.
"I think about my boys and what it would have meant to me at their age to be able to have this kind of experience. It's incredible. Very fortunate."
The Bruins are, no doubt, embracing yet another opportunity to play in what Montgomery labeled the NHL's regular season "Super Bowl" - a celebration and display of hockey in its purest form.
"It's a magnificent moment…it's a special game and no way is it just another regular season game," Montgomery said of Monday's 2023 NHL Discover Winter Classic between his Bruins and the Pittsburgh Penguins.
"It's a great game to show off what the NHL is all about. You have stars that have done so much in the league, you have young budding stars, you have the speed of the game - both teams like to play fast, both teams like to make plays.
"I think it's gonna be a great event and two teams that right now are in playoff positions, and you expect to see come spring time."

Bergeron talks before the 2023 Winter Classic

For Boston, outdoor hockey has become a common occurrence over the last decade, beginning at Fenway Park and the club's first Winter Classic appearance against the Philadelphia Flyers in 2010. Since then, the Bruins have also played in the 2016 Winter Classic against Montreal at Gillette Stadium, the 2019 Winter Classic against Chicago at Notre Dame Stadium, and the 2021 NHL Outdoor at Lake Tahoe against the Flyers.
"It's my fifth [outdoor] game and I'm still looking forward to [Monday]," said Bruins captain Patrice Bergeron. "But also, you look at it on the calendar, it splits the year in half a little bit. It's one game. It's a special game. Excited and happy to be here.
"It's great memories for all of us. It's something you look back after and one of those events that's up there on the list. It really is a lot of fun. It's special. When you think about Fenway Park and the history and all that, being able to be there in that ballpark."
While the Bruins have become used to taking part in these types of events, they know that they should hardly be taken for granted.
"These are great experiences for everybody. For [the families] to be a part of it as well is special. It's a very unique experience. We've been fortunate to be a part of multiple now but you never know if you're gonna have another one…it's very special. Everyone has a lot of fun," said Brad Marchand, who is set for his third career outdoor game.
"It's amazing. I've had a couple outdoor games. Those are very special," added David Pastrnak, who will also be suiting up for his third outdoor game. "The full couple days you have your family in town, and it brings you back to [being] a kid, skating out there.
"Especially here in Boston, you're gonna have the home fans so I'm very excited for [Monday]…two great teams that's had a lot of success in their history. Should be a good matchup."

And even with the focus on embracing the moment, the Bruins - who carry a 10-game point streak (7-0-3) into the contest - know they must use this opportunity to shore up their game and make sure that the memories are lasting for all the right reasons.
"It's always a nice reminder that we still need to be in the moment, play the right way, be structurally sound and all that," said Bergeron. "It's a reminder to be thankful to play this game. We've worked so hard to be here. It's another event that we have to, of course, enjoy, but also put in the work to make it an even better event and come out on top."
