Langenbrunner is the son of Bruins Director of Player Development and Player Personnel Coordinator, Jamie Langenbrunner, who played 18 seasons in the NHL with the Dallas Stars, New Jersey Devils, and St. Louis Blues and is a two-time Stanley Cup champion.
The recently turned 18-year-old, however, did not find out about being drafted by his father's employer from the old man himself.
"No, actually we were in the middle of a lift," Langenbrunner said of his Sioux City teammates. "We practiced and worked out and we had it on the TV in the hangout room. All of a sudden, some guys come running out saying, 'Mason, you just got drafted.' And I was like, 'Wait, what?' We were just in the middle of lifting. Yeah, it was pretty crazy."
Langenbrunner said he "had a little bit of a feeling" that he could end up with the Black & Gold after several strong interviews with the club over the past few months, though he did not believe his father's position provided him with any preferential treatment.
"They all just kept repeating, 'This isn't because your dad is working here or any of that. We love you as a player and if we're going to pick you, we just want you to know that it's nothing on your dad but because we see something in you and your potential of what you can be,'" said Langenbrunner, who has committed to Harvard for the 2021-22 season. "Last Spring is when I started to realize that."
Nevertheless, the Minnesota native is looking forward to working with his father to further his development.
"It's going to be incredible," he said of one day hitting the ice with his dad during Development Camp. "I played for him in peewees and bantams. I think I know what to expect a little bit. I think he's harder on me than just about anyone else. It's definitely something I'm super excited for."
