BOSTON - Jim Montgomery was trying not to get ahead of himself.
As he thought about all of the qualities that Charlie McAvoy possesses, he had to take a step back and remember that the blue liner is still a ways away from joining the Bruins lineup.
"I think he's easily one of the top defensemen in the league. Everyone is different, [Cale] Makar does it differently than he does, but I don't like to put a ceiling on a player that is that talented," said Montgomery. "He can beat people 1-on-1, he can give and go, he can out-skate people, he can out-physical people, so yeah… I'm starting to get excited now."
There is, however, legitimate reason to be enthusiastic.

While Montgomery said that as of now McAvoy will "for sure not be playing" on the B's three-game trip to Pittsburgh, New York, and Toronto, the blue liner is "ahead of schedule" and took the latest step in his recovery from offseason shoulder surgery on Monday morning when he joined his teammates for practice at Warrior Ice Arena as a full participant.
"I'm feeling good," said McAvoy. "Today was back to a normal jersey so you go from non-contact to contact and I kind of alluded to it, but our practices are very respectful. No one is really hitting or bumping too much, but to just be in there and to do drills that sometimes have that incidental contact and to just be playing hockey and have guys flying around around me, taking rushes and stuff like that, it's just good.
"It feels really good. I know it's all sort of elementary just doing stuff like that, but for me it's been a while of just deking cones and pylons so to be out there with guys and to be back and feel like you can see the light at the end of the tunnel is really exciting."

Montgomery added that the club is hopeful that McAvoy can return before Thanksgiving but is staying patient with the blue liner, who underwent a left shoulder arthroscopic stabilization procedure on June 3.
"He's ahead of schedule, he's ahead of December 1st, but he's just starting in his progression," said Montgomery. "We have our internal timeline, we're hopeful that it will be before November 24, to be honest. But he has to check boxes as we continue to progress here and he's just starting that now. Today was the first day where he had a little bit of contact, but everybody kind of knew that it was cautionary around him."
While McAvoy will not be suiting up for any games during Boston's first extended road trip of the season, he will travel with the club for the week-long voyage in an effort to take part in as many team practices as he can.
"Yeah! Let's hit the road! Let's do it. I'm excited," McAvoy said with a beaming smile. "I obviously won't be playing on this trip, but just to be out there and to keep getting practices and pregame skates to be with guys. I think we're at that point where it's more important for me to be on the ice with the guys than it is to just be here by myself. So, I get to see the family back in New York which is cool, good timing and all good things."
McAvoy said while it has been difficult to be isolated away from the team to this point in the season, he has appreciated all the support and well-wishes he has received from his teammates.
"You do feel isolated from the group," said McAvoy. "Our group is very special, though, so guys are always checking up on you, asking you how you're doing, which to me means a lot. Everybody is conscious of what I'm going through and what they are going through… we're on different wavelengths a little bit, so to feel that support from them and to hear their cheers as you're going through this process. It's encouraging and it allows you to come back even faster."
Boston's ace back liner has also been encouraged by his team's historic 8-1-0 start to the season.
"The depth has been crazy," said McAvoy. "You're getting production from everybody and that's just so big, obviously, for the whole group, but for the individual on that basis to feel that validation when you are producing and it's in winning efforts - and just the culture we have, everyone is so supportive of one another so you're seeing guys with big smiles and everybody is having a good time. It's really the ideal start you can have."
McAvoy acknowledged that the success of the team over the first month "sort of removes a little bit of pressure" to rush back into the lineup.
"I mean, you try not to feel that anyway because your timeline is your timeline," he said. "But to see the guys playing so well, it allows you to kind of put the head on the pillow and realize that we're going to be fine, we're in a good spot."

Wait, There's More

  • David Krejci skated before the B's practice on Monday and will travel with the team for their week-long road trip. According to Montgomery, however, the centerman is "out [Tuesday] night and most likely out Thursday."
  • With Krejci sidelined, Pavel Zacha has shifted to the middle to center Taylor Hall and David Pastrnak and acquitted himself well on Friday night in Columbus. "He did a lot of good things," said Montgomery. "I thought that he transported the puck really well, I thought he drove play and I thought he did a good job getting pucks out to Hallsy and Pasta. In his D-zone, he was closing quicker than expected because it's not an easy d-zone coverage for centers and he grasped it and he's getting better and better at it."
  • The Bruins practiced Monday after taking the entire weekend away from the rink, a two-day break that had its pro and cons, per Montgomery. "The plus was their attitudes and their excitement to be at the rink, which goes a long way," he said. "The negative was our sharpness and how good we were, especially our checking portions of it. The passes, even after a day off, physically you get out of rhythm and for whatever reason passes are sloppy. Passes were better than I expected, but our checking skills - we were mentally slow processing for the next play."
  • Montgomery said the coaching staff is "leaning towards" starting Linus Ullmark on Tuesday night in Pittsburgh and Jeremy Swayman on Thursday in New York but the schedule is "to be determined."
