BOSTON -Bruins winger Nick Foligno is the Boston Bruins 2023 Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy nominee, as selected by the Boston chapter of the Professional Hockey Writer's Association (PHWA). The Masterton Trophy is given to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.
"Whether it's through his hardnosed, determined play or his leadership, or simply the smile and joy for hockey that he brings to the rink with him every day, I can't think of a more fitting candidate for the Masterton Trophy than Nick Foligno," said Professional Hockey Writers Association Boston Chapter Chair Joe Haggerty. "He showed his determination and perseverance in battling back from injuries to play a key role for the Boston Bruins this season, and his dedication to ice hockey and sportsmanship are on display every time he laces up the skates. We are proud to announce Nick Foligno as our 2023 Bruins nominee for consideration for the Masterton Trophy."

Foligno, 35, appeared in just 64 games in his first season in Boston in 2021-22 due to multiple injuries. The 6-foot, 210-pound forward had career lows in goals (2), assists (11) and points (13). However, Foligno bounced back in 2022-23, posting 10 goals and 16 assists for 26 points in 60 games with the Bruins before suffering a lower-body injury in late February. The veteran forward set a new career-high with a plus-18 rating while leading the team's forwards with 147 hits.
In the community, Foligno has been actively involved in philanthropic efforts throughout his career. This season, Foligno has visited with homeless veterans at Brighton Marine Campus, in addition to visiting pediatric patients at Boston Children's Hospital on Halloween and Valentine's Day, and delivering holiday gifts to kids at Shriners Children's Boston.
Apart from team initiatives, Foligno also founded The Heart's Playbook Foundation with his wife, Janelle, in 2020, to help patients and their families by working with the best physicians and technology available in heart health.
The winner of the Masterton Trophy is selected by a vote of the 31 chapters of the PHWA at the conclusion of the regular season. Jake DeBrusk (2022), Kevan Miller(2021, 2020), Zdeno Chara (2019, 2017) and David Backes (2018) are recent Bruins' Masterton nominees.
